Five-Week Courses

Our club offers the following six different basic courses of five weeks each. The dates that a course will be offered are shown below its description. You can register in person at the club or by phone (519) 578-4434. Prepayment is required.

In order to help our players choose lessons at the right level, we have colour-coded our lessons as follows.

Beginners 1

This course provides a hands-on introduction to the game of duplicate bridge, including basic scoring, basic bidding, and basic play of the hand. The third and fourth lessons focus on no trump bidding, while the fifth lesson concentrates on weak two bids. A textbook is included.

DATES OFFERED:  Thursday evenings, 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm, January 23, 30, and February 6, 13, and 20, 2020

Beginners 2

This is a continuation of Beginners 1. All concepts are reviewed and reinforced, and bidding is emphasized, including take-out doubles and responses and ace-asking conventions. The principles of declaring no trump and suit contracts will be covered. The same text will be used for both beginner courses.

FEE:  $75

Basic Bidding

This course is intended for those who have taken Beginners 1 and 2 or those who have been away from the game for a while. The topics include: opening in a suit, opening in no trump, responding, pre-empting, Stayman and Jacoby, Gerber, and Blackwood. A binder with lessons and homework sheets is included in the fee.

FEE:  $80 for members/$90 for non-members

Basic Play of the Hand (Suit Contracts)

This course is intended for those who have taken Beginners 1 and 2 or those who have been away from the game for a while. Declarer Play of the Hand (Suit Contracts) teaches how to declare suit contracts, focusing on counting losers, discarding losers, ruffing losers, taking finesses, and establishing suits. The same text is used for both declarer play courses.

FEE:  $75 for members/$85 for non-members, plus cost of text ($20) if not already purchased

Basic Play of the Hand (No Trump)

This course is intended for those who have taken Beginners 1 and 2 or those who have been away from the game for a while. Declarer Play of the Hand (No Trump) teaches how to declare no trump contracts, focusing on counting winners, holding up stoppers, and establishing suits. The same text is used for both declarer play courses.

FEE:  $75 for members/$85 for non-members, plus cost of text ($20) if not already purchased

Basic Defence

This course is intended for those who have taken Beginners 1 and 2 or those who have been away from the game for a while. The course focuses on five aspects of the defence:  opening leads; third-hand play; signals; second-hand play; and discards. Each lesson covers one aspect of defence for both No Trump and suit contracts and includes playing hands to enhance understanding. Specific topics include Rule of 11 on NT leads; when to cover an honour; when to play high in second seat; when to play low in third seat; splitting honours; count, attitude, and suit preference signals; and defensive strategies (eg, active vs passive, cutting declarer's communications, and forcing defence). Lesson hand-outs and hand records are included in the fee. A textbook is available at an additional charge of $15.

FEE:  Each lesson is stand alone and can be taken individually. $15 members/$20 non-members
